Christmas Interior Styling - Creating A Home Less Ordinary

Christmas interior styling can be tricky. It’s tempting to reach straight for red, green and glitter, but the truth is there are endless alternatives. From deep, earthy palettes to layers of foliage, light and texture, there are so many options for creating a look that feels festive, yet personal and stylish.

This year's interior design trends focus on modern and organic elements, infused with warmth, richness, and a hint of nostalgia. Imagine a colour palette of brown, burgundy or forest green layered with antique gold, patterned fabrics, softened with natural textures. Think rustic pots filled with eucalyptus and berries, velvet ribbons tied around napkins or baubles, and candlelight reflected through glassware. It’s a mood that feels timeless but fresh, seasonal yet far from cliché.

By mixing colour, texture and light, you can set the scene for celebrations that feel atmospheric, elegant, and completely your own.

Build a Palette of Rich, Earthy Tones

The starting point for any Christmas interior styling is with colour. Deep, grounded greens paired with burgundy, warm browns or olive this season create a scheme that feels both timeless and current. These shades work all beautifully together, giving rooms a richness that’s instantly inviting. A burgundy throw draped over an armchair or olive cushions on a sofa paired with the right accessories such as a scented candle is enough to shift a space into seasonal mode without it ever feeling forced.

Style with Foliage and Rustic Pots

I love using foliage in my designs, and this is also one of my favourite ways to bring Christmas into a room. Move beyond the classic fir and try a mix of eucalyptus, berries, and trailing greenery arranged in rustic terracotta or stone pots. Clustered together on a console or dining table, they bring an effortless, organic feel. There’s a temptation to try and make it perfect but it doesn’t need to be – let the branches splay and soften because this is where the charm lies.

Add Antique Gold for Glow

Accessories in antique gold add instant warmth and elegance – I love using them sparingly. From gilded candlesticks, cow bell garlands, or a set of brushed-gold cutlery for the table, these pieces catch the light in a way that feels subtle rather than shiny, and they pair beautifully with those deeper earthy tones.

Create Atmosphere with Light

What would Christmas be without lighting? It’s everything at this time of year. Mix soft candlelight in glass holders with sculptural lamps or fairy lights to layer the glow. Place candles in groups at different heights, and let their reflections bounce off gold accents and glassware. The effect is instantly warming, transforming rooms into spaces that feel intimate and festive.

Use Ribbon as a Signature Detail

For me, ribbon is the ultimate styling trick. It instantly makes things feel considered. This year heritage prints, such as Tartan and Velvet are fabric trends to embrace for Christmas styling. Tie it around napkins with a sprig of greenery at each place setting, use it to hang baubles on the tree, or even knot it to the back of dining chairs. Small touches like this elevate everyday objects into something festive and will add texture, warmth and a touch of vintage charm.

Keep it Personal

Finally, choose pieces that mean something to you. Whether that’s a collection of rustic pots you bring out every December, pair of nutcrackers or a set of antique candleholders passed down through the family, let your interior styling tell a story. When you mix meaningful items with warm colour, natural foliage, and thoughtful light, your home will feel festive and completely your own.
